Julie Murphy of Brookfield and Kim Kaul of Gowanda stand in the top two positions after the first round of play in the New York State Golf Association’s Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship at the Schuyler Meadows Club in Loudonville.
Murphy, who is the softball coach at Williamsville South, shot 4-over 77 to lead the Mid-Amateurs in the first of three rounds. Kaul shot 5-over 78. The Mid-Amateur is being played over a 5,533, par 73 layout. The course for the Amateur is par 72, 6,070 yards.
Alexis Hios, a former Junior Girls champion from the Westchester Country Club, leads the Women’s Amateur with 4-under 68. She has a two-stroke lead over Alix Lowe of Colonial Springs and Ina Kim of Deepdale. In a challenging position, although she trails by eight strokes, is Chelsea Dantonio of Fox Valley, who shot 4-over 76. Elena Lopez (Crag Burn) is tied for 12th at 89. Victoria Parker (Orchard Park) is tied for 14th with a 79 while Lauren Kase (Tan Tara) is tied for 16th with 81.
The field will be cut to the low 50 percent for Friday’s final round after 36 holes for each tournament.
In other area golf, Brighton Park golfers led the way Wednesday in qualifying for the Buffalo District Golf Association Junior Boys and Sub-Junior Boys championship on the Sheridan Park course.
Tyler Edholm shot 72 to lead the Juniors. Sean Barrett, also from Brighton, shot 76 in the Sub-Juniors.
