The Canal Fest of the Tonawandas, a summer celebration along the banks of the Erie Canal, will turn 35 this year and will celebrate at its opening ceremonies at noon Sunday, July 16, on the Renaissance Bridge.
The eight-day festival, a joint event by the cities of Tonawanda and North Tonawanda, includes music, a midway, food and a variety of special events.
Some of the highlights include a vintage fire truck assembly from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, the mayors tug of war between city officials at 6:30 p.m. Monday; a parade with a birthday theme at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday; and a car cruise 6 to 10 p.m. July 19.
The celebration continues with a bike cruise 5:30 to 10 p.m. July 21, the Community Missions duck race at 3 p.m. July 22, and the arts and craft festival July 22 to 23. Fireworks will close the festival at dusk on July 23.
