Niagara Parks Police Tuesday recovered a body from the Niagara Gorge after a hiker observed it floating in the rapids and called 911.
The body was discovered at about 1:38 p.m., according to a dispatcher for the parks police. Parks patrol officers arrived on the scene and located the body about 300 yards from the whirlpool in Niagara Falls before it was finally recovered, after floating closer to the shoreline.
Parks patrol officers were assisted by firefighters from the Niagara Falls Fire Department who helped transport the body to a landing zone.
The Erie County Sheriff's Office Air One helicopter also responded and transported the body from the gorge to Erie County Medical Center, where an autopsy was scheduled.
Parks police did not release an identity of the deceased individual, nor specify whether the body was that of a male or female.
