Comedy on Tap: Dan Viola, Rocky LaPorte, Laugh and Other Drugs

There can be laughs aplenty found in Buffalo with a number of comedy shows booked in mid-July. Here are some highlights:

Rochester comedian Dan Viola has opened for Jon Stewart and Steven Wright, but he comes to town as a headliner. Viola draws on his experience as a father of seven children to connect with any audience with his family-friendly comedy. He also has worked as a game show host, teacher, coach and salesman, which helps his engaging stage presence. He will perform at 8 p.m. July 15 at Rob’s Comedy Playhouse (1340 N. Forest Road, Amherst). General admission tickets are $10. Info:

Streetwise comedic sage Rocky LaPorte comes to Helium Comedy Club for five shows over three nights July 13-15. LaPorte’s Brooklyn accent and experiences as a truck driver and dock worker make him a great blue-collar comic for a blue-collar town. He appeared on the eighth season of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” and various movies and late-night shows. LaPorte will perform at 8 p.m. July 13, and 7:30 and 10 p.m. July 14 and 15. Tickets range from $15 to $31, with additional dinner packages available. Info:

Babeville’s regular local comedy showcase, “Laugh and Other Drugs, is back in the Ninth Ward at 8 p.m. July 14. Host Kevin Thomas Jr., a former winner of Helium’s “Buffalo’s Funniest Person” contest, is joined by this year’s champion, Jameel Key. Both have opened for some of comedy’s biggest names. Also on this month’s show is Don Johnson, Max Leroy, Liz Reaves, Spencer Carr and Chuck Garlock. Tickets are $8 in advance, $12 at the door. Babeville is located at 341 Delaware Ave. Info:
