Views on higher education depend on political leanings, according to Pew survey

Opinions about whether colleges and universities are good for the nation depend largely on political leanings, according to a new Pew Research Center study.

While nearly three-quarters of Democrats and people who lean Democratic believe colleges and universities have a positive effect on the direction of the country, a majority of Republicans and those who lean Republican say higher education institutions influence the country negatively.

Just two years ago, a majority of Republicans and Republican leaners reported that colleges and universities had a positive impact on the nation, according to Pew study, which is available on the Pew Research Center's website.

The survey also examined views by political affiliation of the news media, churches and religious organizations and organized labor.
