University at Buffalo women's basketball star JoAnna Smith has signed her first professional contract, the university announced. The Mississippi native, who finished her career in March as the No. 6 scorer in UB history. signed with Clube Uniao Sportiva Ponta Delgada of Portugal's Liga Feminina.
The Portugal women's league begins play in October, and its playoffs start in April. Smith becomes the second UB player to sign a pro contract since coach Felisha Legette-Jack took over the UB program in 2012, joining Christa Baccas.
Smith earned the most wins (78) in her career of any UB women's player since the Bulls joined the Mid-American Conference in 1998. She scored 1,395 points. She ranks third in UB history in three-pointers made and in games played and seventh in field goals made.
"I want to thank the UB Bulls family for an amazing four-year experience and for growing me as a person as well as an athlete," said Smith. "Clube Uniao Sportiva Ponta Delgada is a great team who competes at the top of their league every year with a goal of winning."
Uniao Sportiva went 15-7 last season and reached the quarterfinals of the league playoffs.
