Fisherman snags man calling for help near Unity Island

A man was pulled from the water near Unity Island early Monday morning after a fisherman cast his net into the water to help keep the man afloat until rescuers could reach him, according to the Coast Guard.

The man was heard calling for help sometime around midnight and a Coast Guard small boat crew pulled the man from the water, the Coast Guard said. Members of the Buffalo Fire Department's Rescue 1 also helped get the man out of the water, the unit posted on Twitter.

Unity Island sits in the Niagara River and is separated from the mainland by the Black Rock Lock and the Black Rock Canal.

The man, who has not been identified by authorities, was evaluated by an ambulance crew. No further information was immediately available about his condition.

A Buffalo police spokesman said the man was out of the water by the time the police Underwater Recovery Team arrived at the scene.
