Relatives suspected in thefts during hospital stays

LOCKPORT – Relatives are suspected in recent thefts from hospitalized family members in Newfane and the Town of Lockport, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office reports.

In Newfane, a Washington Street man told sheriff's investigators that his grandson used his debit card without permission to fraudulently take $600 from his bank account while he was hospitalized between June 12 and 19. Deputies said there is bank surveillance video of the suspect making the withdrawals. A warrant has been issued.

In the Town of Lockport, a woman told deputies that she suspected that her sister, who came to stay and help care for her in her Royal Parkway North home, had taken prescription drugs, clothing and a twin bed with the help of a boyfriend while she and her husband were hospitalized between March and June. However, deputies said, she refused to press charges.
