City Hallways (July 6): No more waiting for the restrooms

The new public bathrooms in City Hall are completed and opened.

And they look really, really good. Even some City Hall staffers who have keys to locked restrooms on other floors are coming down to the basement to use the new bathrooms.

It's a far cry from last year when City Hallways told you about those awful-looking public bathrooms after we received a letter from a reader who called them a public embarrassment. The woman noted that while the Art Deco building is magnificent, the public ladies' room was far from magnificent.

"This is embarrassing," she wrote to City Hallways, "especially for a landmark building."

Not long after the note was shared with Mayor Byron Brown, city officials announced the basement-level bathrooms would be fixed up.

Here's what one of the restrooms looked like last year with broken and makeshift doors (some of which didn't even close), mismatched faucets knobs and cracked mirrors.

But as Mayor Brown quipped Wednesday when he unveiled the newly remodeled restrooms, "There is no longer any danger."
