Wires down on I-290 temporarily closes road, causing major traffic backups

Emergency crews shut down the I-290 westbound at Colvin Boulevard and eastbound at Elmwood Avenue for over two hours Wednesday afternoon because of wires down across the roadway.

The Brighton Volunteer Fire Department asked the public to stay away from the area. "We are currently on location on the 290W between Colvin & Delaware for wires down across the roadway. NITTEC and the New York State Department of Transportation have both been notified," the fire department posted on Facebook.

Also, more than 500 National Grid customers lost power in the Town of Tonawanda near where crews were working. Power was restored at roughly 5:30 p.m.
