Barbara A. Seals Nevergold, president of the Buffalo School Board, has been named vice chairwoman of the Conference of Big 5 School Districts for 2017-18. The Rev. Steve Lopez, president of the Yonkers Board of Education, will serve as chairman.
The conference represents New York’s urban school systems including the Buffalo, New York City, Rochester, Syracuse and Yonkers districts. In 2014, the organization included the Utica City School District as an affiliate member. Collectively, the six districts educate 45 percent of the state’s public school children, and the conference seeks to speak with one voice in advocating for urban education issues.
Nevergold was first appointed as an at-large member to the Buffalo School Board in 2011 to fill a vacancy, and won re-election in 2014. She became board president in 2016 after also holding that post previously. She and Lopez will serve in their positions until June 30, 2018.
