Memorial concert Friday for longtime Akron Community Band director

Akron Community Band will hold a memorial concert Friday, July 7 for its former director, James F. Gerber, who died in February.

An oboe, bassoon, English horn, clarinet and sax player, Gerber joined the band in June 1958. He became music director in 1967 and announced his retirement from that position last year after 50 seasons.

The free memorial concert begins at 8 p.m. in Russell Park, Main Street, Akron. Selections will include a number of Gerber's favorites, including "Italian Festival," "Beguine for Band," "Instant Concert," "Niagara Overture" and "Mambo No. 5."

The band performs at 8 p.m. in the Russell Park gazebo every Friday through Aug. 18. Lawn chairs and blankets are recommended. The rain location is Akron Central School Edward Allen Auditorium, 47 Bloomingdale Ave.

The band presents varied programs, including marches, show tunes, novelty numbers, overtures and pop tunes.
