Make plans for these July beer and food events

We are always looking out for everyone’s well-being. So when the July 4 holidays are over, here are four events to keep the summer party going.

“Botanicals” is a hot new word in the world of food and drink, but in this case, the Botanicals & Brews indicates the location — the Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens (2655 South Park).

The event takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. July 13. Tickets are $35 ($30 members) and include craft beer tastings, beer and cheese pairing and what is described as “delicious tidbits” from Oliver’s Restaurant. Music is provided from JJ Swing and there are tours of the gardens.

Frank Lloyd Wright once said during a New York Times interview, "A man is a fool if he drinks before he reaches the age of 50, and a fool if he doesn’t afterward.”

We don’t quite know why FLW eschewed drinking before the age of 50, but those of a drinking age can still get tickets to the Bricks & Brews event at the Darwin Martin House (125 Jewett Parkway).

The annual event will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. July 14. Tickets are $55 ($45 members) and includes 20 samples of beer from 17 area breweries. R&R BBQ and Amy’s food trucks will be on hand for a la carte food service. Music will be provided by Critt’s Juke Joint and there will be a basket auction.

The house will not be open for tours, however. (Good, because we don't trust ourselves to not spill a drink.) Tickets are available by calling 856-3858 or at

For those looking for a day trip that doesn’t last long into the wee hours, Southern Tier Brewing Company in Lakewood (Chautauqua) will host its biggest event of the year — SummerFest 2017 — from noon to 6 p.m. July 15. Admission is free. It's kid-friendly and dogs on leashes are welcome. No outside food is permitted. Event is rain or shine. There will be tons of STBC beer, food, music by Mosaic Foundation rock/reggae band and the ever-popular keg bowling.

Hamburg Brewing (6553 Boston State Road) will host its second annual clam jam and oyster cookout on the gorgeous patio that reminds us of a Frontgate catalog. The fun begins at 7 p.m. July 22. There will be live music, too.
