Lockport and its Erie Canal locks are expected to go national on the CBS Sunday Morning program.
The locks are to be a featured part of a story on the bicentennial of the canal. The piece currently is scheduled to be aired July 9, a CBS News spokesman said.
A CBS crew visited Lockport recently and interviewed chief lock tender John McKee, according to David R. Kinyon, president of the Lockport Locks Heritage Corp. That's a city agency that operates the original locks, which have been partially restored to working order.
The construction of the canal began in 1817 and was completed in 1825. The original set of five stone locks was decommissioned in 1914 and replaced by the two current steel locks.
CBS Sunday Morning airs on WIVB-TV from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Sundays.
