Fireworks in Evans have been canceled this year.
The fireworks, which have taken place on July 3 for more than 20 years, were canceled because the pyrotechnics vendor has not secured the proper permits, Supervisor Mary K. Hosler said.
The fireworks are not a town function, but are put on by two businesses near Lake Erie Beach who collect funds for the show, she said. The town supports the fireworks by shutting down area streets for safety reasons and providing extra police protection, Hosler said. The roads will be open Monday evening.
Hosler said she was surprised when she found out Wednesday the fireworks would be canceled.
"It's sad. The community likes it." she said."We feel bad. The police were ready, the Erie County Command Center was coming."
The town had issued a local permit for the fireworks, but Hosler said a federal permit also is required.
