Fortman, Patterson earn top hockey academic honors

Canisius defenseman Geoff Fortman was among the athletes named Scholar Athlete of the Year Wednesday when the Atlantic Hockey Conference announced its academic honors including the conference All-Academic teams for 2016-17.

Fortman was named a Scholar Athlete of the Year for the third consecutive season. The senior from Crystal Lake, Ill., posted a perfect 4.0 grade point average for the third straight year. He is the first Golden Griffin to receive the award three times.

Kevin Patterson of Niagara, a senior defenseman,  was named to the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic team for the fourth time. He was a AHC Scholar Athlete of the Year twice in his career at Niagara, 2013-14 and 2014-15. when he posted 4.0 GPAs.

Nineteen Canisius athletics and 14 from Niagara were named to the AHC All-Academic team.
