Love dogs? Like beer? Does your dog like beer? Then leash up your best friend and head to Community Beer Works for Barks N' Brews. From 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. June 30, you and your best friend can both enjoy a beer. That's right: Community Beer Works has created Dog Beer for your canine friend as part of an event with dogs in mind.
The event promotes BarkHappy Buffalo, a mobile phone app that helps dog owners find dog-friendly bars, restaurants and nearby events, while also benefiting Buffalo C.A.R.E.S, a non-profit group that rescues homeless animals.
"Everybody at the brewery owns a dog – we love dogs," said Chris Sutton, Community Beer Works' director of hospitality who is fostering dogs after the recent death of his pit bull, Luna. "Normally we allow dogs in. On a weekend we get two or three couples with a dog. We bring a bowl of water out for them and they are more than welcome to hang out in the brewery."
The idea for the canine beer came from the dog-tempting aromas of one of the beer's brewed by Community Beer Works.
"For Dyngus Day, we do a Dx3 gratzer beer. When we brew it, it smells like sausages," Sutton laughed. A leftover keg of the beer was boiled and simmered until the alcohol burned off. "It will keep the smoky, meaty flavor of the beer – it is perfect for a dog."
In addition to cutting out the alcohol, the brewers needed to limit the hops. "We dropped two hops in, but there aren't hops that will do any damage. You don't want to feed your dog too much of it."
Friendly dogs that play well with others are invited to the brewery (15 Lafayette Ave.) and must be leashed. There will be a dog talent show and a photographer will take dog and people pictures. Tickets are $10 and include a free goody bag including treats. Fetch Gourmet will be there for treats for the dogs; Lloyd Taco Truck for the people.
Community Beer Works will have a full draft board from IPA to sours and dark beers and will donate $1 from each can of Dog Beer to Buffalo Cares. Get tickets online at buffalobarksnbrews.eventbrite.com.
