TALES TO TELL – Mayor Byron W. Brown will be a guest reader as EPIC – Every Person Influences Children – kicks off its Storytime series for the summer at Canalside from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday. Brown will read at about 11:30.
Activities also will include a visit from the mascot Sabretooth, crafts and giveaways, including bike helmets from Safe Kids WNY while supplies last. There also will be a police car, a fire truck and an ambulance for youngsters to explore. EPIC Storytime will continue every Wednesday at Canalside through Aug. 30.

Alonzo Cushing

FIGHTING SPIRIT – Pomfret Town Historian Todd Langworthy will portray Civil War hero Alonzo Cushing during a presentation at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Lucy Bensley Center, 23 N. Buffalo St., Springville, hosted by the Western New York Civil War Society. It’s free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
Cushing, a Fredonia native and West Point graduate, lost his life while commanding the 4th U.S. Artillery Battery A in the Battle of Gettysburg and was awarded the Medal of Honor. He and his four brothers all fought for the Union in the war. For more info, call Tom Place at 957-2740.

BLOOMING AGAIN – The Lovejoy in Bloom Contest, which ran from 1988 to 2008, is returning this year with a new name. Sponsored by the Iron Island Preservation Society, it’s now Lovejoy’s Iron Island in Bloom Contest.
Entries must be received by July 16. Front yards and side yards will be considered for judging, which will take place during the week of July 23. Top three gardens will receive prizes.

REUNION TIME – The Class of 1964 from West Seneca High School is having a picnic reunion beginning at 10 a.m. July 22 in Old Barn Shelter 13 in Chestnut Ridge Park, Orchard Park.
