Police: City of Tonawanda man set fire to garage

City of Tonawanda police charged a man with arson in connection with a June 16 garage fire on Broad Street, authorities said Tuesday.

John E. Smith Jr., 46, who lives in a Broad Street apartment in front of the garage set ablaze, was charged with fourth-degree arson, criminal reckless endangerment of property and reckless endangerment, police said.

The fire happened shortly before 1 a.m. at 129 Broad and had the potential to spread to several nearby structures, police said.

Smith, whose bail was set at $5,000, is scheduled to appear at a felony hearing on Thursday.
