'Designated driver' charged with drunken driving

A man from Vancouver, Wash., who was acting as his group's "designated driver" was charged with DWI after a traffic stop in the City of Tonawanda around 4:45 a.m. Saturday, police said.

Christian R. Leal, 22,  told Tonawanda police he had "only two beers" in Buffalo before getting behind the wheel as the group's designated driver.  He was pulled over on Main Street in the City of Tonawanda after police clocked him traveling 46 mph in a 30 mph zone.

Police said Leal showed "signs of intoxication" and registered a .12 on the Breathalyzer. He was charged with DWI, operating a vehicle while his blood alcohol level was over .08, speeding and following too closely.

He was held on $250 bail.
