A cast iron sign that touts the "Birthplace of the Grain Elevator" which was reported stolen last weekend was recovered by Buffalo Police divers, police reported Tuesday.
Industrial Heritage Committee President Lorraine Pierro reported to police that the heavy, metal sign was taken off a concrete post located near lamp post No. 7 on Erie Street. Pierro said it wasn't certain exactly when the sign was taken, but the Buffalo History Gazette reported it missing on its Facebook site between June 12 and 13.
The sign was vandalized and thrown in the water, police said on its Facebook page Tuesday.
The marker, purchased by the Industrial Heritage Committee and the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society, was installed and dedicated by the late Mayor James Griffin in 1993.
