Niagara County will file lawsuit against opioid makers

The Niagara County Legislature voted unanimously Tuesday to join the ranks of counties suing the manufacturers of opioid painkillers for reimbursement of costs resulting from the opioid abuse epidemic.

Erie County is among the local governments that already have filed lawsuits against drugmakers over increased costs for police and emergency response and social services connected to opioid overdoses.

In Niagara County, the Legislature instructed County Attorney Claude A. Joerg to retain the same law firm used by Nassau County for its suit against drug companies for "manufacturing and promoting products that were not safe," in the words of the resolution.

Joerg said he has yet to decide whether the county should file its own lawsuit or join one of the suits already filed by others.
