Construction may start this fall on the 2.2-mile gap in the Erie Canalway trail in Pendleton, the last missing link in the trail in Western New York.
State Canal Corp. spokesman Steven Gosset said that the agency soon will seek bids for the project, with hopes of starting work in October on the connection between Tonawanda Creek and Fisk roads. Once that portion is completed, the trail will run an uninterrupted 135 miles east from Buffalo, Gosset said.
A formal announcement which the Canal Corp. had scheduled for Monday has been canceled, Gosset said Wednesday. It may be rescheduled for October as a groundbreaking.
The event was to have been held in conjunction with the annual bicycle ride from Buffalo to Albany by Our Ability, a disability rights group. The ride will go on as scheduled, Gosset said.
