BurgerFest returns to Hamburg with ethnic twists

Banh mi sliders, churrasco and mapo burgers, veggie and lamb burgers: It almost doesn't sound like BurgerFest.

This year's BurgerFest in the Village of Hamburg will feature intriguing ethnic twists from food trucks, but there still will be plenty of traditional beef burgers at the festival, from 11:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. July 15 on Main and Buffalo streets and in the municipal parking lot. There also will be mac and cheese, tacos and burritos, as well as spaghetti and meatball sundaes.

BurgerFest celebrates the birth of the hamburger in Hamburg. Hamburg held its first BurgerFest in 1985 to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of the hamburger. Legend has it Frank and Charles Menches created the burger at the Hamburg fairgrounds when they ran out of pork sausage and used ground beef in 1885.
