Sabres notebook: Pu chosen for Team Canada camp

Sabres prospect Cliff Pu is one of 42 players named to the development camp roster for Team Canada's entry into the World Junior Championships later this year in Buffalo, Hockey Canada announced Tuesday.

Pu, a center, was Buffalo's third-round choice in last year's draft. He had 35 goals, 51 assists and a team-high 86 points in 63 games last season for the London Knights.

There are nine first-round choices from the 2016 Draft in Buffalo on the Team Canada roster, including No. 3 pick Pierre-Luc Dubois of Columbus

Team USA will be hosting its World Junior Summer Showcase July 29-Aug. 5 at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Mich. There are no Sabres draft picks or Western New York products on the roster.

The tournament opens Dec. 26 in KeyBank Center and HarborCenter. Team Canada and Team USA are scheduled to meet in a pool play game Dec. 29 in New Era Field.

Columbus captain Nick Foligno, the older brother of Sabres winger Marcus Foligno, was awarded the King Clancy Memorial Trophy at Tuesday night's NHL Humanitarian Awards in Las Vegas.  The award is presented to “the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and who has made a noteworthy contribution to his community.”  He was chosen as the winner by select members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association. The Buffalo News had a ballot in the voting. Foligno was also named the winner of the Mark Messier Leadership Award.

Foligno had 26 goals and 51 points last season to lead  the Blue Jackets to a franchise-record 108 points. Off the ice, Foligno and his wife, Janelle, committed $1 million to be split between Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus and Boston Children’s Hospital in support of pediatric congenital heart care in honor of their daughter, Milana.

He also teamed with Papa John’s Pizza on donations for every goal he scores to the Janis Foligno Foundation. The foundation was created in memory of Nick and Marcus' mother, who lost her battle with breast cancer in 2009.

Nick Foligno was born in Buffalo in 1988 while his father, Mike, was the captain of the Sabres. Mike Foligno is currently a scout for the Vegas Golden Knights.
