Letter: People should not be afraid to say what is on their minds

People should not be afraid to say what is on their minds

I am a woman. I am a conservative. And I am scared.

When did free speech become hate speech? When did civil discourse become angry epithets? When did peaceful protests become violent demonstrations? Why has a difference of political opinion become a virtual beheading, a stabbing on stage and shooting members of Congress?

To paraphrase German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemoller, “Then they came for the Republicans, and I did not speak out because I was not a Republican.”

We must peacefully and respectfully agree to disagree otherwise we may be doomed to repeat history: “Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me.”
