What a terrific event for graduates of 1967
Recently I had the opportunity to walk across the stage of Kleinhans Music Hall to receive my high school diploma from St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute. The diploma was an “honorary” one as I had received the actual diploma 50 years ago, also at Kleinhans. The occasion was the graduation ceremony for the class of 2017, and we members of the class of 1967 were honored for, I guess, our longevity.
However, I felt pride in knowing that close to 60 of my fellow members of the class of 1967 still thought enough of our shared four years and the education that the good brothers gave to us to celebrate it now. Included in the class are professionals in law, medicine, education, government and the arts. The brotherhood of an all-boys school has stuck with us throughout the years. The friendships formed back then have in many cases continued today, or were renewed, only now the conversations revolve around retirement plans, grandchildren and golf.
Fond memories of proms, football games (especially against our arch-rival, Canisius High) and cafeteria food come back as if they took place yesterday. To our surprise, some of our favorite teachers even came back. I wonder if the class of 2017 would have similar thoughts and memories if they get to meet in 2067.
We all thoroughly enjoyed the weekend, especially being able to see classmates from all over the country and to remember those who are gone. Kudos to the school administration and the Reunion Committee for a great celebration. Let’s hope the next 50 are as much fun!
