Just in time for the summer solstice, the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens kicks off its new Tasting Tuesdays on June 20. The event will continue on Tuesdays through Aug. 22 (excluding July 4).
While we love Food Truck Tuesdays at Larkin, this event promises to be a more relaxed and serene experience.
For the event, a small café will be opened inside the gardens and will serve farm-to-table small plates and herbaceous drinks from chef Avi Altman of Obviously Avi Catering. Altman has partnered with the gardens for its events for more than seven years. Visitors can meet Altman at Tasting Tuesdays.
“Partnering with Obviously Avi Catering was a no-brainer for us,” said Erin Grajek, associate vice president of Marketing & Visitor Experience. “Avi is an extremely creative chef who is passionate about the farm-to-table experience and he’s committed to sourcing ingredients locally.”
Tables will be scattered throughout the gardens for guests to enjoy their food and drinks. Dishes will range from sweet to savory. Food, beer, wine and drinks will be priced individually.
A few of initial offerings for this inaugural event include an edible flower pot, honeycomb with bread and butter, asparagus mille feuille (think of a Napoleon), a French mushroom soup, west-side salt cod, smoked tomato braised pork shoulder, berries with fresh whipped cream and a shortcake-cheesecake.
Tours of the gardens will be self-guided.
“This is a great date night or an evening out to relax with your family,” said Grajek. “We decided to add Tasting Tuesdays to our calendar because there is a sense of peacefulness inside the Botanical Gardens, and we wanted to give visitors the opportunity to enjoy the experience.”
Tasting Tuesdays run 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (garden hours are noon to 8 p.m.). Regular admission is $11 for adults, $10 for seniors (62 and older), $9 students (13 and older), $6 for ages 3-12, Botanical Garden Members and kids two and under are free.
Tickets are available online or at the admission desk.
