Rob Ray in 2003: 'I detest Phil Housley'

Rob Ray never backed down from a fight on the ice, but that doesn't mean he hated his fellow combatants.

That level of disgust was saved for other players, like new Sabres coach Phil Housley.

"I detest Phil Housley," Ray told the News in a 2003 piece that chronicled his fight card and listed five players for whom Ray harbored "special feelings."

"I still hate him. I fight Tie [Domi], but it's not as if I hate him," Ray added in the story. "I played with Phil Housley and he treated me like [crap] while he was here. He's someone, to this day, I still hate. He showed you no respect and pretended that he was 'the man' and never gave you a chance as a young guy to fit in. I have a problem with that guy."

Ray currently serves as the team's color commentator on the television broadcast. He and Housley will likely need to hug it out before the season. (Update: Ray says he has moved on from detesting Housley.)

(For those interested, Hockeyfights.com credits Ray with 227 career fights, though none against Housley. The Hall-of-Fame defenseman was only involved in eight career fights.)

Update II: New York Capitol reporter Jon Campbell passes along this excerpt from Ray's book:

Sabres hire Phil Housley as coach, bring back piece of history

RAZOR'S GREATEST HITS ROB RAY WILL BE REMEMBERS FOR STANDING UP FOR HIS TEAMMATES ON THE ICE, AND FOR HIS COMMUNITY OFF THE PLAYING SURFACE
