St. Gregory's teacher charged with texting indecent messages to 12-year-old

A teacher at St. Gregory the Great K-8 school in Williamsville was jailed Wednesday after police accused him of sending sexual explicit messages and photos to a 12-year-old.

Scott Schaefer, 44, was arrested Tuesday on charges of disseminating indecent materials to a minor, a felony and a misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a child, Amherst police said.

Schaefer was arraigned before Amherst Town Justice Geoffrey K. Klein, wearing slacks and a white T-shirt. He did not say anything in court.

A prosecutor told the judge that Schaefer, if convicted of the felony, faces a possible four-year state prison term. She asked that bail be set at least $100,000 cash. The judge entered a non-guilty plea on behalf of Schaefer.

Klein issued a verbal gag order on the prosecution and defense attorneys at the arraignment, directing them not to talk about the case.

Joanna Pasceri, a spokeswoman for Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn, told The Buffalo News, "it was the judge who put a gag order on the case, so we cannot release any more info at this time." Douglas P. Stiller, the court assigned attorney to represent Schaefer at the arraignment, also declined comment.

Klein ordered Schaefer held on $25,000 cash bail or a $50,000 bail bond.
