Indictment accuses Olean man of murdering wife

LITTLE VALLEY  -- Edward J. Smith, 50, of Olean, was recently ordered held in jail after he pleaded not guilty to murdering his wife in their Olean apartment, Cattaraugus County prosecutors said.

Smith is accused of stabbing to death his wife, Kathy, 59, on May 13.

District Attorney Lori Pettit Rieman said the grand jury indicted him on two counts of second-degree murder plus first-degree manslaughter, first-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Olean police officers were sent to the Smiths' North Union Street apartment on the morning of May 13 after the county 911 center received a call, purportedly from Smith, saying, "I murdered my wife." Kathy Smith was found by officers on a bed in the flat with a knife stuck in her chest.
