Before gangs of kids start causing trouble in the City of Tonawanda, police there often offer them coupons for free Slurpees.
Capt. Frederic Foels said the 7-Eleven promotion is something officers there have been using each summer for more than 20 years to improve police relations with youth.
"It's a way to interact with the kids," said Foels. He said they hand out the coupons for the slushy treat even after potentially negative situations.
"We see a few kids hanging out where they shouldn't be. We tell them they can't hang out there and oh, by the way come over to my car and here's coupon for you ... and just start a dialogue with them," said Foels. "We want to build more relationships with them."
The police department is trying to show youngsters that every interaction with police doesn't have to be negative, Foels said.
