Woman critically injured after being struck in hit-and-run on Grand Island

A Grand Island woman remains in critical condition after she was struck by a pickup in a hit-and-run Tuesday as she was walking on East River Road on Grand Island, according to State Police.

Dana Papaj, 53, had been walking on the west shoulder of the road between Whitehaven Road and Riverwoods Drive when she was struck shortly after 8 p.m.

Papaj was walking her dog at the time she was struck, according to a Facebook post by her daughter, Brittany Gruttadauria. She was taken to Erie County Medical Center.

Dana Papaj has a head injury and is medically sedated, her daughter posted.

The vehicle that is believed by police to have struck Papaj was described by authorities as a newer, black four-door Dodge pickup, which left the scene, according to State Police. Troopers said a passenger side mirror of the vehicle was damaged after striking the victim.

The State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation were on the scene Tuesday.
