The #PrepTalkCountdown continues.
We are unveiling the Prep Talk Players of the Year (more than 35 total honorees) as we count down to the Prep Talk Awards on Wednesday at the Hyatt Regency Buffalo.
#PrepTalkResume: Won the city singles/double championship for adult and junior squash in Western New York. Matthew also won the New York Junior Regionals and seven other city- and country-wide tournaments.
Statistics 101: Currently ranked No. 42 in the country for under-19 boys, Matthew played No. 1 singles for Canisius three of his four seasons. He went undefeated against area foes during the season and posted a 3-1 record at nationals.
Favorite competitive moment: Winning high school team nationals in our division last year.
Favorite teammates: Allen Tompkins and Kingman Bassett.
Toughest opponent (team): Nichols.
Toughest opponent (individual): Leyton Johnson.
Role model: My parents and grandpa.
Pro athlete I look up to: Ramy Ashour (squash player).
I wouldn’t be Prep Talk Player of the Year without: My mom, dad, brother, all my teammates and coaches Jamie Crombie, Steve Joyce and John Rooney.
When I’m not playing or practicing my sport, I’m: playing golf and hanging out with friends.
Favorite academic subject: Math.
Planned college major: Finance.
Future plans: Franklin and Marshall College and will try to play professional doubles squash after college.

What: The fourth annual Prep Talk Awards – our version of Oscar Night for WNY high school sports.

Who's invited: We will honor the Prep Talk Players of the Year in every sport that we cover – along with the All-Western New York football first team and the first-team members of the All-Western New York boys and girls basketball teams. There will also be some very special Prep Talk Awards: Male and Female Athlete of the Year, Coach of the Year, Team of the Year and Program of the Year (and some surprises).

Who will be the Prep Talk Team of the Year? Miguel Rodriguez's final Power 10 of the fall determined our choices of the top teams from the first season of the school year. Rodriguez's final Power 10 of the winter listed our choices from the second season of 2014-15. The No. 1 in each season's Power 10 becomes a finalist for Prep Talk Team of the Year.
