Coast Guard suspends search for woman reported missing

The Coast Guard on Monday announced it was suspending a search for a woman who went missing Sunday, presumably after falling overboard from a 52-foot boat on Lake Erie.

Capt. Joseph DuFresne, commander of the Buffalo Coast Guard, announced the suspension Monday evening after a nearly 30-hour search. According to DuFresne, the search covered the equivalent of more than 1,400 square miles.

“With great sadness, we report that active search operations for the missing woman have been suspended," DuFresne said in a statement.

The Coast Guard began the search at about 1:40 p.m. Sunday, after receiving a call about a woman who had fallen overboard from a boat on Lake Erie near Presque Isle.

The name of the missing woman was not released Monday by the Coast Guard.
