Officials from Sumitomo Rubber's tire plant outlined plans for a two-story 71,000-square-foot expansion during a Town of Tonawanda Planning Board meeting on Wednesday.
The planned expansion on 11 acres of land was just a portion of the overall investment on the 137-acre site at 3445 River Road, said project manager Joe Capotosta of Perry Group Engineering. A 25,000-square-foot expansion is already under construction.
Capotosta said the expansion on the northwest corner of the property would include loading docks to receive materials and processing lines for rubber mixers.
"You know it's a big plant when a 71,000-square-foot expansion looks tiny," said Planning Board Chairman Kenneth Swanekamp.
Last year, the Japanese-owned company announced plans to invest $87 million in the site over three years, increasing tire production at the plant, which employs 1,300 people.
The project will return to the Planning Board in August for a final review.
