Road to the NHL Draft: Elias Pettersson

Elias Pettersson

Position: Center

Professional team: Timra (Sweden-2)

2016-17 stats: 43 games, 19 goals, 22 assists, 41 points

Size: 6-foot-2, 161 pounds

Born: Sundsvall, Sweden

Central Scouting rank: No. 2 (Europe)

What to know: It looks like a breeze would blow the rail-thin Pettersson on his side. It’s not true, though. He creates a breeze whenever he skates, and he just keeps on motoring.

The center was an offensive juggernaut in Sweden’s second division, averaging nearly a point per game and ranking second on his team in goals. His assist total was the highest of any junior-aged player in the league. He’s smart and creative, traits that are clearly in demand. If put in a one-on-one situation, odds are good he’s going to win.

While he’s a star at home, he hasn’t found success on the international stage. He had no goals and one assist in six games for Sweden at the world junior championships. He scored just once in seven games at the under-18 world tournament last season, but he did manage seven assists.

They said it: “A fast, speedy star, he had a sensational season for Timra in Sweden’s second division, consistently producing offense despite the fact he’s playing with and against much older players.” – Goran Stubb, Dan Marr, NHL director of European scouting.

The Buffalo News is profiling prospects leading up to the NHL Draft, which will be held June 23-24 in Chicago.
