Niagara Falls Police arrested 13 people Wednesday in six raids across the city in response to a series of complaints police have received regarding drug activity and nuisance crimes, authorities said.
"Most of the arrests were heroin-related, (and) some were for crack cocaine," said Niagara Falls Police Superintendent E. Bryan DalPorto.
Two of the arrests were made at a house that had been condemned by the city, DalPorto said.
Charges against those arrested included three felonies and 11 misdemeanors, authorities said.
Police were able to zero in on certain properties based on information obtained from citizens, block clubs and business owners, who helped launch the investigations that led to Wednesday's raids, DalPorto said.
He said two of the houses targeted by police were responsible for more than 90 calls made to police so far this year. DalPorto said the arrests included a number of repeat offenders.
"The same people seem to be committing the same violent crimes ... A very small amount of people are responsible for a lot of our criminal activity. One of the persons we arrested today, he's 44 years old and has been arrested 59 times, 13 of which were for narcotics," DalPorto said.
According to authorities, those arrested at 2204 Independence Ave. were Scott Gamache, who was charged with three counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminally using drug paraphernalia and criminal nuisance; and Emily R. Bechtold, who was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and loitering. Also charged with loitering were Alexis C. Teschner, Vincent Carbone and Carly G. McEvoy, authorities said.
Arrested at 1516 22nd St., according to authorities, were William M. Welch, who was charged on a domestic violence warrant and with loitering; and Jennifer K. Shanley, who was charged on a warrant for failure to appear in court and loitering. Also charged with loitering were Kelly A. Baronich and Robert E. Evard, authorities said.
Brett P. Stewart and Janet Lynn Gatley were arrested at 438 22nd St., according to police. Stewart was charged with six counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminally using drug paraphernalia, authorities said. Gatley also was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, authorities said.
Henry J. Hudson Jr. was arrested at 2637 Porter Road and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, according to police.
Joanna C. Leone was arrested at 2719 Pine Ave. and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, police said.
A search warrant also was executed at 201 72nd St., but no arrests were made there, authorities said.
