Rochester man pleads not guilty in fatal shooting at sports complex

Andre Lewis, 39, of Rochester, pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder at his arraignment Wednesday in State Supreme Court, stemming from the shooting of his former stepfather in West Seneca.

The two, plus other family members, were attending a junior high girls' basketball tournament April 29 at the Niagara Frontier Sports Complex on Meyer Road when they got into an argument that became physical, according to authorities. Robert Echols, 54, also of Rochester, was pulled to the ground by other people, and Lewis, who was carrying a licensed pistol, allegedly shot Echols in the chest while he was on the ground and again when he tried to get up, according to authorities.

Prosecutors say the incident was captured on video.

Lewis was arrested shortly after the shooting and is being held without bail.
