Schmelzer to captain Canisius hockey

Ryan Schmelzer, a senior from Buffalo, was named captain of the 2017-18 Canisius College hockey team, new coach Trevor Large announced Tuesday. Schmelzer has played in 111 games in his first three seasons with the Golden Griffins with 27 goals, and 49 assists for 76 points. He was an alternate captain last season when he had a team high plus-16 rating.

Schmelzer had five game-winning goals, which all came during the Griffs’ 17-game winning streak. Before Canisius, Schmelzer attended Williamsville East where he played two seasons of hockey before playing for the Buffalo Jr. Sabres.

Canisius (21-11-7 last season) will be defending its first Atlantic Hockey regular season championship.
