The Town of Lockport gave the green light Tuesday for the new $17 million Lockport Family YMCA, to be built on Snyder Drive.

The town Planning Board unanimously approved the plans for the 52,000-square-foot, two-story building. It will replace the existing 91-year-old YMCA on East Avenue in the City of Lockport.

Buddy Campbell, president and CEO of the YMCA Buffalo Niagara, said ground will be broken by Aug. 1, and the new facility is targeted to open in October 2018. About $10 million was raised in a fund drive that lasted a decade, and most of the remainder of the cost will be borrowed.

Town Attorney Brian D. Seaman said the town's contribution will be construction of a sidewalk from Shimer Drive, north of the site, to the new YMCA. The only driveway into the property will run from Snyder Drive.
