Erie, Pa., man sentenced on carjacking and gun charges

An Erie, Pa., man will do time following his conviction on carjacking and firearms charges.

Michael Gonzalez-Colon, 21, was sentenced Monday to 9 1/2 years in prison by U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo.

Gonzalez-Colon was traveling with Dimas Colon-Cruz and Denis Cruz on July 20, 2015, from Erie, Pa., to Dunkirk on stolen all-terrain vehicles, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael P. Felicetta. Shortly after arriving in Dunkirk, the ATV's were seized by the Dunkirk Police Department.

Gonzalez-Colon, Colon-Cruz and Cruz assaulted one victim in the vicinity of Robin and Second streets in Dunkirk, according to prosecutors. The three brandished firearms during the assault, striking the victim in the face before stealing several items from the victim.

A short time later, they assaulted a second victim who was exiting a car near 209 Robin St. The three men ordered the second victim to kneel on the ground before striking that person in the head with a handgun and stealing the individual's car.

Later that day, Lakeside Lawncare in Fredonia was burglarized and several items were stolen, including a gray 2002 GMC Sierra pickup truck. Two days later, the second victim's vehicle and the stolen pickup truck were recovered in Erie, Pa., authorities said.

Charges are still pending against Colon-Cruz and Cruz.
