A 20-year-old City of Tonawanda man struck a utility pole near Tonawanda High School, drove onto a soccer field and crashed into the net early Tuesday morning, police said.

Tyler R. Smith, of Grove Street, faces driving while intoxicated and aggravated DWI charges, according to City of Tonawanda police.

The crash happened at 3:17 a.m. when police said Smith failed to negotiate a turn from Hinds Street onto Fletcher Street. Smith's pickup ended up caught in the soccer net, authorities said.

Neither Smith nor a passenger was injured, police said.

At the police station, Smith registered a blood-alcohol content of 0.20 percent, 2.5 times the legal limit, according to police. In addition to the DWI charges, Smith was also charged with criminal mischief and issued tickets for six traffic infractions.
