Billy Gaffney, the 24-year-old first year pro from Williamsville, stood 5-under par after 13 holes of his opening round on the Lakes Golf and Country Club course in Columbus, Ohio in the sectional qualifier for the U.S. Open. However, Gaffney, who started on the front nine finished his round with with four straight bogeys for 1-under par 71. He withdrew before he completed his second round at the Brookside Golf and Country Club against afield that included some well-known names --Keegan Bradley, Vijay Sing, Stewart Cink, Nick Watney, K.J. Choi, Luke Donald -- as well as some top amateurs. Fourteen golfers from the Columbia field of 122 golfers would qualify for the 117th Open which will be held June 15-18 in Erin Hills in Wisconsin.
Stauffer, OP team win at Bartlett
Kirk Stauffer of Pine Acres CC and the Orchard Park team led by assistant pro Rob Krajewski were the winners Monday in the Bartlett Country Club Pro Am in Olean. Stauffer shot an even-par 70 to lead the pros. Tied for second were Paul Sanders (Ravenwood) and Michael Shine (CC of Buffalo) with 73.
Krajewski and teammates Wayne Johnston, Mark Stavish and Mike Amore combined to shoot 14-under 126 to win the Pro Am team event.
