Tops has completed its acquisition of the Shurfine store on Route 5 in Angola and will begin converting it to the Tops banner, the company said.
The store, at 9049 Erie Road, brings the number of Tops' corporate-owned locations to 173 in New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont and Massachusetts. Shurfine employees will be offered employment at the Tops store.
The Amherst-based grocer promises "significant renovations" to the 20,600-square-foot store, including an expanded assortment of refrigerated produce and store-cut fruits and vegetables, new decor and more options in organics, meat and seafood.
Its nearby Derby store will remain open, the company said.
In April, Shurfine began cutting down its hours and closing earlier. Right now, it is in the process of liquidating its inventory at a discount.
Shurfine Markets is a retailer cooperative made up of independent stores in Western New York, Pennsylvania, Maine and Maryland.
