'Serial shoplifter' faces up to 7 years in Red Bull ripoff

Tracy R. Maracle, who was banned from all Walmarts after being caught shoplifting at the chain's Springville location in May 2015, faces up to seven years in prison after admitting Monday that he tried to wheel a cart full of Red Bull energy drinks out of the North Tonawanda Walmart last year.

Maracle, 46, of Empire Street, Franklinville, pleaded guilty to third-degree burglary. He was arrested on May 12, 2016. The plea settled an indictment that also accused him of returning to the North Tonawanda Walmart Aug. 13 and trying to steal a television.

"He's a serial shoplifter," Niagara County Assistant District Attorney Kevin D. Canali said. Maracle's cart included mostly Red Bull but also contained some pop, toilet paper and a laundry hamper, with a total price of $280.

Maracle, who was brought to court in a wheelchair because of a lower back injury, is to be sentenced July 21 by Niagara County Judge Matthew J. Murphy III.
