Ransomville woman avoids jail in teen sexting case

A  judge sentenced a woman to probation Monday for sending photos of her exposed breasts and buttocks to a 16-year-old Newfane girl via text messages last year.

Maria C. Ray, 29, of C Street, Ransomville, could have gone to jail for as long as two years for her guilty pleas to endangering the welfare of a child and a reduced count of attempted disseminating indecent material to a minor. But Niagara County Judge Matthew J. Murphy III chose to impose three years of probation.

Those crimes are not covered under the Sex Offender Registration Act, so Ray will not be classified as a sex offender, First Assistant District Attorney Holly E. Sloma said.

The photos were sent from Ray's cellphone March 25, 2016. Murphy barred Ray from any further contact with the girl.

"It was wrong," Ray said of her decision to send the photos.
