Andrew LaCongo of the East Aurora/Holland faded from contention with five birdies in a row in the middle of his round On Monday and finished 17th in the New York State Public High Schools boys golf championship at Cornell University's Robert Trent Jones Course in Ithaca.
LaCongo, who had 10 bogeys and no birdies in his final 18-hole round, shot a 10-over 81 and finished the tournament at 14-over 156.
Two Orchard Park golfers, sophomore Ben Spitz and senior Mitchell Smith, shot 78s for the best round of the day among the nine members of the Section VI team. However, they were not in serious contention. Spitz finished 48th and Smith 54th. Kevin Halpern of Williamsville North, the Section VI medalist last month, finished 69th with 86-82-168.
LaCongo, a sophomore at Holland Central, was three strokes off the lead and tied for fourth after Sunday's first round.
Nathan Han, a sophomore from Somers (Section I), defeated another sophomore, first-round leader Adam Xiao of Manhasset (Section VIII), on the third hole of a playoff too win the championship after each finished at 146. Xiao needed a birdie on the final hole to tie finishing his round at 3-over 74. Han shot an up-down round with four birdies and five bogeys for a 1-over 72.
Danny Gianniny, a senior from Pittsford-Sutherland (Section V), shot a 69 for the day's best round and finished third overall at 147. Gianniny led Section V to the team title by nine strokes over Section VIII (Nassau County) and by 10 over Section I (Westchester County). Section VI finished eighth, 68 strokes behind the champion.
