East Aurora captures third in state environmental competition

A team from East Aurora High School came in third in a hands-on statewide environmental education competition.

Team members included Olivia Guard, Tyler Phillips, Mary Beavers, Ben Bachman and Ava Warren.

Envirothon tests students’ knowledge and understanding of natural resource and environmental issues in New York State. Teams compete in a series of hands-on, field station tests in the areas of soil and land use, aquatic ecology, forestry and wildlife as well as an emerging environmental issue. This year's issue focused on agricultural soil and water conservation stewardship.

Teams from 214 schools in 56 counties competed for a chance to move up to the state Envirothon competition, which took place last month at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. In addition to knowledge of natural resource science, students also are challenged through public speaking and civic engagement in the competition.

East Aurora came in first in the Erie County competition.
