Rochester man indicted in fatal shooting at sports venue

An Erie County grand jury has indicted a Rochester man on one count of intentional murder, a Class A felony, in the shooting death of another man while both were attending a junior-high girls basketball tournament in West Seneca on April 29.

Andre M. Lewis, 39, is accused of firing several shots at Robert Echols, 54, of Irondequoit, outside the Niagara Frontier Sports Complex, 425 Meyer Road. Town police said the shooting appeared to be the result of a domestic dispute that escalated. Echols was formerly married to Lewis's mother, according to Rochester-area media. He was shot near the entrance to the complex just as the AAU basketball tournament game was ending, and taken to Erie County Medical Center, where he died. Echols reportedly had a daughter playing in the tournament.

Lewis is scheduled to be arraigned on the murder charge Wednesday in State Supreme Court.
